but he requested me to get some one at the Village to attend to the case - that note is now on file in this office. Through my intervention a warrant was then got out here, at the C.H., & placed into the hands of the Sheriff, whom I entreated to attend to it as soon as possible. Some question arising as to what course should be pursued if it were found that Cauley lived in Edgefield. I gave it as my opinion that, under the circumstances, the warrant would either have to be transferred to the proper officers in Edgefield, or, otherwise be countersigned by a Magistrate there, who, if he saw fit, could authorize the officer from that County to execute it there.

A few days after the Sheriff reported that on his having either sent or gone there himself it was found that Cauley did live in Edgefield, & in consequence, the warrant had been brought back. After that nothing further was done in the matter until some time in August - near the end of that month I believe - when Cauley happening to come to the Village, he on being notified by the Sheriff readily gave Bond.

Now while it is true Cauley was [[strikethrough]] not [[/strikethrough]] not present at the time the Outrage on the freedman was committed, still, as Blackwell remarked on taking hold of him that night - "Ha, you are the man they say can't be moved, eh?
