The "Univesal" Life Insurance Company.
We have received a copy of the new Prospectus of this Company. It is an exceedingly well written and able expose of the system of life insurance of which the "Universal" is the pioneer in this country. The arguments in favor of the stock plan are given with a force and clearness which exhibit a thorough knowledge and study of the subject, and furnish evidence that the affairs of the company are in the hands of gentlemen eminently qualified by education and a practical knowledge of their business, for the successful management of the enterprise.

It is now more than three years ago since the "Universal" introduced to the public a plan which promised to reduce insurance in cost and advance it in utility, beyond the effects of any system previously adopted. The success which has attended the operation and crowned the results of the experiment has not only redeemed the promises made by it projectors, but has exceeded their most sanguine expectations. Although it is estimated that the premium receipts of the "Universal" have, in consequence of its great reduction in rates, been one third less than they would have been had its charges been as high as those of the Mutual Companies, yet, have its assets, under the impetus of popular favor and vigorous management, accumulated with a steady progression that has placed this youthful institution on a basis of [[?]] firmness and security unsurpassed by any Mutual at its age, and excelling several that had the advantage of a prior start in their career. Prosperity an genuine and solid, and attained in spite of the countless difficulties inseparable from the inauguration of a new system reflects the highest credit on its authors, and affords the clearest proof that the new plan is excellent in conception, and has been carried out with an efficiency and skill which entitle the management to the gratitude and confidence of the insured and the public.

The "Universal" has granted 4.793 policies covering an insurance amounting to $12,845,400, and of this issue 2,954 policies, insuring $7,615,810 are still in force. There is every reason to anticipate that its cash receipts from premiums will, during the current year, be increased to nearly $350,000-a rapid and substantial growth, which shows that the public mind was fully ripe for the essential changes the company has made; and it is equally gratifying to know that this worthy enterprise has now a solid foundation in assets, which renders each policy holder as secure as could the capital and accumulations of the most colossal company in existence.

We are much pleased to observe that the nonforfeiture of every policy issued by the company to the extent of the holder's equitable interest, is guaranteed by a clause in the policy itself while all endowment policies, of whatever kind and term, possess all the advantages of nonforfeiture hitherto usually confined to life polices on the "non-forfeiture plan." Such fairness and liberality, combines with the other attractive features of this company's method of business, cannot fail to render the "Universal" and its accomplished managers highly popular. It is needless to add that the prospectus exhibits all that elegance and taste in its arrangement and typography for which all the documents of this company are remarkable.
