Lieutenant:
I have the honor to report, that information has reached me that on the night of the 23rd Wm Heirst, freedman, was shot & killed while attempting to escape by the window from his house, where he was attacked by a party of five white men, named as yet unknown. No cause known except that he was a Republican. He I understand was 75 years old. I have heard rumors of still another freedman being killed, but cannot ascertain the particulars It is also reported that a great many freedmen, near the Edgefield line; are lying out in the woods, being afraid to approach their houses at night. One Colored man, about four miles from here, had had his house burnt down. Threats of killing off the Radical Negroes are every day heard of; and I have also heard something of a rev't said to have taken place in a distant part of the County, caused by an attempt
