J.J. Browning, States, (white) I am a Magistrate. I have been in constant attendance at the Provost Court, since its organisation, and since Lieut Leidtke was the presiding Judge. I have been there officially and unofficially, - since the 4th of November 1867 and I most emphatically state that I have never seen Lt Leidtke under the influence of liquor during that time.   have known Capt Leidtke ever since he has been on duty here, about two years, and I have never seen him when he was the least [[strikethrough]] intoxicated [[/strikethrough]] incapacitated from doing his whole duty, and doing it admirably at that. I have had much to do with Lt Leidtke, and both publicly and privately. I have lived in the neighborhood with him, and if he was removed from this community I could regard it as a public loss. I know Dr Sanford W Barker, and to my knowledge he wrote to the Provost Judge letters, while a case against him was under consideration. These letters were of a nature calculated to intimidate and influence the Court in their decision. I consider them as levying black mail. I never heard of Lieut Leidtke shooting at one, nor I never heard of his trying to have illicit intercourse with anybody. Dr Barker wrote to me several letters during the
