E34 Edisto Island S.C. March 6th 1868 Bt. Maj. Gen. R.K. Scott Com'r Bureau R.F. & A.L. Charleston General The undersigned residents and planters of Edisto Island, would most respectfully and earnestly request that Lieut. Johnston, the Bureau Agent stationed on this Island, may be retained in his present position. The removal of Lieut. Johnston at the present time will be a very serious detriment to the interests of the planters; we are now organizing our labor for the coming year, and from that a change in officers now, would interfere very materially with our plans. Lieut. Johnstons course on this Island has been perfectly impartial, and we believe that his conduct so far has been approved of by all both white and black Wm M. Bailey M.D. E.A. Bailey C.D.
