Charleston South Carolina General I should long ago communicated to you my views respecting the continuance of the Freedmens Bureau had I not feared occupying the position that I do, that by volunteering an opinion I should have rendered myself liable to the charge of selfish motives. Having now been asked I hesitate no longer. I am fairly convinced that a greater necessity now exists for the continuance of the Bureau than ever before, and my opinion is based upon actual observation for ten months in a district remote from any city or large town. The Bureau having been instituted for the care protection and benefit of the Freedpeople it would be a great injustice to them to take away the last & only real friend they have ever known viz. the Bureau
