Reports upon cases of Freedmen tried by Dist. Court. Injustice to Freedmen etc. etc.

Headquarters Second Military District,
Pro. Mar. General's Office.
Charleston, S.C. March 2nd 1868.

I B 389

Respectfully returned to the Act'g: Asst: Adjt: Gen'l: 2nd Mil'y: Dist.

It is impossible to obtain a copy of the record, or the charge of the Judge: as the Judge has left the State: and no record is kept; but I have obtained a copy of the minutes of the Judge in two cases, that have been appealed.

From which it will be seen, that the evidence, and the Judge's charges were in favor of the Defendants.

I respectfully recommend that the Mil'y. Authorities intervene, to do these parties justice; otherwise men who are undoubtedly innocent, will have to remain in jail for months and without any chance of redress.
