Schofield, Martha,

Desires to know with certainty if the Bureau will put up a School building at that place, if she purchases a lot with her own means. Makes a lengthy statement of the condition of the School she is working in.
Encloses a photograph of Lucretia Mott, and asks that General Howard send her one of his own.

Respectfully returned to Maj. Genl. O. O. Howard, Comr.
I was led to recommend an appropriation of 500.# for the construction of a School House at Aiken S.C. because the Bureau is compelled to pay 40.# per mo. rent for a suitable house. Upon visiting Aiken, I found that owing to speculations, property was so high, that the freedpeople could not raise the means to purchase a suitable lot. The African M E Church already owned a large lot with a house 40x75 one half completed upon it.
I made an arrangement with their Presiding Elder and Trustees, that the $500.# might be used to complete their house in consideration of which they were to convey the house to the Bureau or its assigns, for school purposes until such time
