Rev Joseph Welch

Dear Sir

I arrived here on last Monday night and opened school on Wednesday morning and had thirty [[strikethrough]][[?]][[/strikethrough]] pupils to convene with. The Freed people seems to be very thankful to you for sending me down here.

They are all very willing and anxious to educate their children, but they are very poor. I will stand in need of the amount you agreed to pay me as fast as it becomes due to pay my expences. I have established a Sunday school and will need all the books you can spare. The Church is progressing. The following was handed to me by Rev Aaron Vinson.

"New Years Church, Members 15. This is the statement I ought to have given you at the general conference instead of the one I gave you signed Aaron Vinson"

I am Very respectfully your &c
Joseph Burk
