Hallettsville, Texas, Aug. 13th, 1868
Rev. Joseph Welch
Supt. Schools
Dear Sir:
I wish to establish a freedmen's school at Hackberry, T.X. 12 miles east of this place on the Columbus & San Antonio stage road. The location is favorable for a good school. I enclose a letter from Mr. Newhaus in regard to the house, also from E. A. Grace of Columbus applying for situation as teacher. If you favor the enterprise please consult Capt. Robts AIM for authority to rent the house. I have a temporary school in Sweet Home taught by Amanda Cook [[?]] which has been in operation about six weeks the school has not been disturbed by any person and I have consulted several of the neighbors (Democrats) of the school proposed and they promise that it shall not be molested.
I am vry respectfully
Your obt. servt
