Brenham Texas
Sept 30th 1868

Rev. Jos. Welch
Supt. of Schools.

Dear Sir,
The only encouragement received since engaged in teaching at Brenham has been the rapid progress of my anxious pupils & their thirst for Sundy school information - The disadvantage Ive been laboring under has caused disencouragement & causes me to ask for the usual amount allowed teachers per month, from the date of my Commissions: & as there has been no appropriation in Brenham for Educational interest, I most earnestly petition (on behalf of the Colored Citizens of this Town) that an appropriation be made for the purpose of building a suitable school-house in Brenham. The house I am now using, although inferior, have high rent to pay for it.

Yours Resptly,
M. Foster
