Sir,
I hope you will pardon me for troubling you with this letter. But I have made several attempts to realize the appropriation of 500$ made by Genl O. O. Howard to aid in Building a school house at Harmony Walker County Texas. There are about 40 families settled there and I think a permanent School of 60 scholars can be organized. I am making an effort to secure some quaker Teachers from Ohio this fall in which event I am sure a valuable school can be built up at this place and we will have to have a good & large school house and if you will apply 500$ for that purpose I will see that an equal amount is made up by the freedmen & Citizens of Walker Co. The freedmen are here, forming a settlement and society of their own, and deserves & merits the support & aid of the Govt. & all good philanthropic citizens, north & south. They are working well and since the fall of 1865 when the first settlement was made up to the present time, there has not bee a just charge or presentment by a grand jury against one of them for any offence whatever.
