get his pay when he got through or not, he thought it doubtful if Mr. Stearns had rec'd the money I told him no one was to get any money till the work was done. Mr. Stearns came to see me said morning. Said he would pay him as soon as the work was done. The man went to work the next day but seems a little doubtful about the pay yet. Says he is not afraid of you or me, either, but seems to have little faith in Mr. Stearns whether he has foundation for his lack of confidence I cannot tell.

I hear people talk about him at the table a good deal at different times, they call him a selfish "fractious man". He has been very pleasant to me since his return and seemed interested to get the work done, when he sees me, but he is very busy building his mill.

I hope he will keep good natured till this business is finished up. The lumber was not all dressed we found when the work was begun. I sent word to Mr. S and he said he would come round directly but has not put in an appearance yet.

There may be enough to finish the desks or nearly enough.

I thought best to let you know how matters stand that justice may be done. I do not care to have Mr. S. I have written about him for it which, be better for me that he feel pleasantly, especially sh'd I come here again.

I will write again as soon as the work is done.

I cannot acct. for it but the scholars pour in this month, 14 new ones this week. 49 enrolled now. About the time I get ready
