Mr. L. W. Stevenson
Supt of Education

Sir, Your opinion of Bryan; & Navasota; would be different if you had the same ordeal that I had, I say to you in justice to both places; that they derive no assistance from the United States, as any of its agents; me and my family feels the effects of disappointment, among such confounded humbugs. My last report I sent from Bryan; sharing you the action to establish a school I save the people a fair trial; but on test; I found they send me no pupils. This at first appeared a mystery; but I soon discovered the cause, their excuse was to the effect; that all the teachers that had been there was unfaithful, in their estimation, & also of the opinion that all men here of the same class; finding this to be the exact state of affairs; I saw every moment a less of time, among such disciples I went back to Navasota, & on arriving there I found Wm, Bookman, of Courtney he said I would get 35 Scholers to commence with, & a prospect of as many more in a short period; having no other alternative at present I accepted this proposition, I went to Courtney & opened school on the 9th Inst., in the hope of success, time will Develop it however, please let me have an answer to this as soon as possible and Oblige

Very respectfully
Your Obt. Servt
