and be contented with our pay. There is one honest, capable young mulatto (quite light) who I thought would make an excellent teacher for Columbia - Could you offer him or any like him a definite amount with what they could make besides? I do not recommend it but ask as I am not aware what salary you have paid.

I note what you say of Galveston, Houston, Austin & Victoria being self-supporting. I will select a good lady teacher for the latter or you can of course transfer any of the teachers I have named in my former letter. The one got in for Bastrop is a particularly capable and experienced colored man - Wm Holland

I would like (as I wrote before) to have a list of places you desire me to supply with teachers, & as near an indication of the character of the teachers desired as you can conveniently give.

From your saying you would continue the salary where you have been paying, for our opposition leads me to think you refuse to pay more than $15 in some places - If so I should feel at liberty to send a male teacher where desired & should pay $25 and his board and travelling expenses. Am I right?

Very truly yours
