I have the honor to respectfully solicit the appointment of teacher at the Freedmen School in course of erection at this place.

I served during the war as commissioned officer, &c, in the 178th N.Y. Vols, the latter part of the war as 1st Lieutenant and Regimental Quartermaster of said regiment.  Until lately I served in the regular army as Sergeant Major of the 26th Infantry.  In February and March of the year I was examined for promotion, passed both the preliminary and final examination, but failed to obtain my commission on account of Act of Congress passed at that
