The original price paid by each scholar was two dollars ($2 [[?]]) but as the number of scholars fell off either from the inability or reluctance of their parents to pay teachers were compelled to lower their charge until it rapidly declined from the price just stated to the present one of fifty cents. and even this small sum I am sorry to say is paid with as much if not more difficulty and reluctance than when the charge for each pupil was two dollars. It has unfortunately too been reported to the freedpeople that in a short time they will have free schools; and therefore they feel a [[still?]] a greater reluctance to in- convenience themselves for a benefit; which they have been led to believe will soon be con- ferred upon them gratis.
