R2 Office S.A.C. B.R. &c Lockhart, April 30, 1868. Lieut. J.P. Richardson A.A.A. Genl. It is the expressed opinion of the better class of whites that freedmen should be educated but there are quite a number who not only discourage the idea but try to persuade them that it is not to their interest to educate their children. The freedpeople as a whole try to educate themselves both young and old, I think they want no assistance but have the means among themselves if properly used I have great difficulty in providing Teachers and have but three in the two counties, but hope to have as many more in a few weeks. Very Resp &c (Signed) H.C. Peterson 1st Lt 26 Inf. S.A.C. The Schools will not be opened until Monday May 4/68
