Bastrop, May 31, 1868

Lieut Chas A Vernon
A.A.A.G.

The feeling and disposition of the white educationally is dead and listless. They will not help the blacks. The freedpeople with the assistance of the Government have erected a comfortable school house but otherwise they evince a disregard of the opportunities it affords for acquiring knowledge, it has been impossible thus far to awaken sufficient interest among the blacks to organize a night school.
