Clinton, May. 31. 1868.

Lieut. Chas. A. Vernou.

The subject of education receives no encouragement or assistance from the whitepeople. In Victoria the freedpeople are alive on the subject, their school has increased to over One hundred scholars and they are about to build a school house and Church, and in connection with it a house for their teacher to live in, and in that respect they are taking the advance of the white population, While in Victoria I visited the Night School and found it in a flourishing condition. I noticed several grey haired men among the number who were learning beyond all expectation.

Very Respectfully &c
