Lieut. Chas A. Vernon
A.A.A.G.

The sentiments of the white people are against educating the freedpeople. There has been but little done within the last three months in regard to education, from the fact, that the freedmen have no money with which to pay the Teachers. I cannot say they are not making any efforts towards education. They may be assisted by furnishing Teachers, Houses &c.

The freedpeople made but little last year (1867) and have scarcely enough means to live on, consequently they can do nothing in the way of education.

Very Resp &c.
