Lieut Chas. A. Vernou.

The white people are opposed to educating the blacks. Yet the spirit of opposition is gradually subsiding. No one seems desirous of getting his name up in taking a stand against it

The school is large and if good teachers could be secured it would become one of the most flourishing schools for freed people in the State I have sent to New Orleans for two teachers. The freedpeople in this City have purchased a Lot on twelve months credit and have raised over one hundred dollars in specie for the purpose of erecting a respectable Church and School house.
