The white people in this community are bitterly opposed to educating the blacks Their policy is, Keep the blacks in darkness. The freed people have engaged a lot in the City and have raised about a hundred dollars in specie to erect a Church and School house, but since the death of Dick Newby and in consequence of the many threats of the white people to burn the house down, many of the freedpeople have become discouraged and talk of moving out of the country. If they could be assured that their lives and property were safe in the community they would take hold of the matter with a will and unaided they would accomplish wonders! I examined the colored school yesterday and felt astonished and delighted at the progress the many scholars have made in reading, speaking and spelling.
