Hallettsville, June 30. 1868.

Lieut Chas. A. Vernou
A A A Genl

Little or no opposition amongst the whites. Hugh Ames employed by the S.a. Com 1st June has a good school of 50 to 60 and is increasing. The freedpeople are making great exertions to have their children educated.

Owing the rent for a school room not being paid, the S.a. Com. had to rent a room out his own responsbility and could not get one on any other terms.
