R5 Office S.A.C. B.R &c Columbus. June 30 1868. Lieut Chas A Vernou. A.A.A.G. Public sentiment [[strikethrough]] is [[/strikethrough]] is in favor of general education - if sincere - though no efforts have been made to advance the freedmen in any way.- they themselves are too much engaged in their crops to accomplish much. Have made efforts to have the Citizens of Osage, Alleyton & Jones' bend, take the initiatory steps to build a house, that I might apply for aid - but without success. I obtained from a citizen 5 Acres gratis, at Jones' Bend, for a Church School house and grave yard. Very Resp &c (Signed) Louis. W. Stevenson S.A.C.
