I have to report in obedience to your instructions desiring me to make inquiries as to the probability of establishing a freedmans School in Gonzales Town. Your Attention having been called to the subject by one Frank Johnson freedman of that place.

I have made such inquiries as is within my power without a personal visit to that place. I am assured by the freedmen that they will support a school in the Town of from 30 to 50 scholars. The whites appear to take no interest whatever in the matters. If an energetic man was sent there as Teacher I am of opinion he could establish a good school- and then also could one be formed on the other side of the River, from Gonzales there has arrived recently a young man in the latter neighborhood and is now attempting the formation of a School. but I am satisfied he is not qualified.

Mrs Dudley is still teaching a small school
