Lieut. Chas. A. Vernon
A.A.A.Genl.

It would be a very good thing if schools could be established in this District. The freedpeople are very anxious there should be, so that, they could have their children educated, but they are wholly unable to pay until the present cotton crop is [[strikethrough]] raised [[/strikethrough]] made and if schools are established Teacher would have to be sent here, none could be found. The people of Eastern Texas think it too degrading an occupation for any of them to teach freedpeople.
