R 9 Office S.A.C. B.R &c Hempstead. July 31. 1868. Lt. Chas. A. Vernon. A.A.A.G. I do not know the feeling of the whitepeople of this County in regard to freedmens schools, but the freedmen themselves seem to be indifferent in regard to it. A Mr Webber of Seguin has been here with me and endeavored to establish a school, but failed, the freedmen having no money to support one. I have no doubt but a large school could be raised in the fall or as soon as the freedmen begin to realize something for their years labor Very Resp &c (Signed) Alex B. Coggeshall S.A.C.
