Lieut. Chas. A Vernou

There seems to be very little interest upon this subject, now steps seems to have been taken to establish schools. The freedmen are very poor and the whites seem to take no interest in their welfare on the contrary, the prejudice against [[strikethrough]] them [[/strikethrough]] educating the negro is as active today as before the war, - I have tried to get the freedmen in many localities to give me some substantial appearances that they will support schools - I think I shall succeed in a few places.
