Austin, July 31 1868.

Lieut. Chas. A. Vernou.
A.A.A.G.

The feeling of the whites is hostile to the education of the colored people, and in consequence of it the white ladies teaching cannot obtain boarding places.

Some of the freedmen who proposed to subscribe the $200.00 for the erection of a permanent school house at Centerville, state that the wheat crop is a failure, and express a fear, that should they rebuild the school house it will be burnt again.

Mr. Burke has control of the school formerly taught by Miss [[strikethrough]] Evans [[/strikethrough]] Campbell, & Amanda Robinson (col'd) of that of Miss Evans.
