Hallettsville July 31. 1868.

Lt. Chas. A. Vernou.
A.A.A. Genl.

There is a very good school at Hallettsville taught by Hugh Ames, also a school near Sweet Home by Amanda Cook f.w. also a school in Jackson Co. both of which are private enterprises of the freedpeople I am about establishing a permanent school near Hackberry P.O. Lavaca Co. which will be reported to the Supt. Other schools would be established if teachers could be procured. One good school should be maintained at County Site of each County from which teachers for smaller schools could be supplied. If the freedpeople could have pecuniary [[strikethrough]] interest
[[/strikethrough]] assistance to build a permanent school house, for this purpose it would be seed sown on good ground. The freedpeople will support a school to the utmost of their means, and would build a house themselves: but owing to failure in crops since they have been free, and not getting what was justly due them of what was raised, they are not able to build a school house & pay tuition fees.
