Hallettsville, Aug 31, 1868.

Lt Chas A. Vernou

The freedpeople continue anxious to have their children educated: but are now stopped from school to pick cotton. One school at Hallettsville and one soon to be commenced at Hackberry P.O. Lavaca Co. If Presidential election is favorable to the freedpeople, they propose to build a good school & church at Hallettsville, some assistance from the Govt. would be thankfully received.
