Lockhart Aug. 31. 1868

Lieut. Chas. A. Vernou
A.A.A.G

The feeling on the subject of education is better than heretofore. As I stated above disloyal persons find that is no use kicking against the bricks and they must make an effort to use the freedpeople.

The freedpeople are exerting themselves to the utmost of their ability to educate their children. No effort has been made in the 23rd Sub Dist. outside that made by the freedpeople themselves, except $15.00 per month paid to the teacher by the Bureau

They may be assisted by qualified teachers being furnished them, their school house being repaired &c.
