Office S.a.C. B.R. &c
Houston, Aug. 31. 1868.

Lieut. Chas. A. Vernou.
A.A.A.G.

There is no disposition on the part of the white to assist the freed people in the way of education. Have the colored people the means, they would support their own schools. At present owing to the hard times, without the assistance of the Bureau very little would be accomplished in the way of education.

There are now in operation four private schools for colored children in the county of Harris, only one teacher has as yet reported at the office.
