Austin, Aug. 31 1868.

Lieut. Chas. A. Vernou.
A.A.A.G.

The feeling of the whites is hostile to the education of the colored people and in consequence white lady teachers cannot get boarding places.

From visits to Mr. Burk's school it appeared that the pupils attending had been very well taught, The history class in 3 pages only making 2 slight mistakes in reading. Notwithstanding the urgent request from this office, the colored people of Circleville have not taken (as far as reported to the office) the steps anticipated to erect a school house in that place. This is probably owing to the failure of the wheat crop and the fear that it would be again burned down.

Mr. Billingsley reported that he had a school of 70 July.
