No interest is taken by the white citizens in regard to educating the freed people; No steps are taken by the Authorities to promote the same. There are now in Harris Co. four private schools for col'd children, two of them are kept by white men. Owing to the great poverty existing among the colored people teachers are unable to collect enough to pay expenses.

Without the assistance of the Bureau, very little would be done in the way of education.
