Lockhart. Sept. 30. 1868

Lt. Chas. A. Vernou
A.A.A.G.

Very little is said by the white people in regard to the education of the f.m., Schools are unmolested. It is evident, that, the party known as conservative rebel democrats are opposed to the education of the freedpeople they are everlastingly preaching Negro equality.

The freedpeople have constructed temporary School Houses, but it appears to me that they becoming rather lukewarm on the subject of education, it may be on account of the cotton picking season. They may be helped by being furnished with money & teachers.
