Waco, Sept 30, 1868.

Lt. Chas. A. Vernou
A.A.A.G.

I have hired school houses for the f.m. and they are doing all that they possibly can do /i.e. to pay these teachers. They may be assisted by sending them good teacher, very few men can be found who will teach freedmens' school.

At present most of the schools have closed in order that the children might pick the cotton.
