San Augustine Texas, October 3rd 1868.

To Lieut Charles A. Vernou
A.A.A. Gen'l,
Bureau of R F and A.L.
Austin, Texas.

Sir:

The freedpeople in this District are very indiffrent in regard to the subject of education. There has been no action taken to promote the interest of education. Their only hopes of maintaining a school would be by assistance from abroad.

There are no schools in this District.
