Bureau of R F and A.L.
San Augustine Texas, October 1868,

To 1st Lieut Charles A Vernou
A.A.A. Genl
Bureau of R F and A.L.
Austin, Texas.

Sir:

The freedpeople, most of them, are anxious to learn to read, but get no assistance from the white population, nor have they a teacher, therefore, but slow progress is made, some of the young people are advancing by their own exertions.

It would be a great assistance to the Colored people, if a teacher could be sent to them, adults as well as children would attend.

No day or night school is taught for Colored people in this Dist:

Remarks. About 40 pupils the average attendance for October 1868
