Office Sub. Asst. Commr
Bureau of R F and A.L.
Columbus, Texas, October 31st 1868

To Lieut C A Vernou U.S.A.
A.A.A. Genl
Bureau of R F and A.L.
Austin, Texas.

Sir:

Nominally good. In some cases the freedmen are making efforts to secure ground and build a house. It is almost an impossibility to get unity of action and accomplish anything - So that all efforts as a rule amount to little or nothing.

The crops are good and as soon as gathered they will have the money to do something towards buildings if they so deserve.

During the two succeeding months of 1868, it is expected that several log houses will be built - so as to open new schools.
