Office Sub. Asst. Coms'r
B.R.F and A Lands
Crockett, Houston County, Texas
October 31st 1868.

To Capt. C.S. Robert
AAA General

Education
The freedmen are rather negligent and careless about the education of their children - this is owing perhaps to the want of competent colored teachers among them. There are no white teachers who teach colored children. I dont think the feeling of the people is disposed to be interested in the education of the colored people. White teachers for colored schools would not be safe in this community. The government should supply the County with a half dozen colored teachers of both sexes - giving them a small pay and making them partly dependant on the parents of the pupils

I am, Very Respectfully
Your Obt. Servant.
