Sir:

The whites profess to be in favor of promoting education but if a white teacher should take charge of a school, he or she could not obtain board at any reputable boarding house, nor would they be allowed into any white family. The freedpeople are all in favor of education. There is a school house here, has no teacher.

I am endeavouring to find some competent person to take charge of the school when it is finished. Ever since coming here, my time has been occupied in settling up old disputes of one and two years standing and have been prevented from making a tour through the county and ascertaining how the school system was working in other places. I have made inquiries and find that there are school houses enough but no teachers. I shall visit all points where it is necessary (school houses) so soon as my other duties
