Office Sub. Asst. Com'r
Bureau of R.F. and A.L.,
Lockhart, Texas, October 31st 1868.

To Bvt. Capt. C.S. Roberts
A.A.A. General
Bureau of RF and A.L.,
Austin, Texas
Sir:

The whites are not approving the school to my knowledge thought they look upon a teacher of a freedman's school with utter contempt. The freedpeople for the last two months have been picking cotton and have been taking little interest in schools from this time forward - should they be able to procure comfortable school house. The school will be full in some locations. The freedpeople have built log school house, they are not however doing as much as they ought to do. They expect two much from the Government, they may be assisted by being furnished teachers and money.
