Office Sub. Asst Com'r
Bureau of R F and A.L.
Brenham, Texas, October 31st 1868,

To Lieut: Charles A. Vernou
A.A.A. General,
Bureau of R.F and A.L.,
Austin, Texas,

Sir:

The desire for an education is great at this time, the schools are few and small as many are in the Cotton fields gathering the crop. The Cotton crop is better than was expected and the freedpeople will have more means than any previous year.

The freedpeople, I think will patronize the schools well after the crops are gathered. No efforts are made at this time- Many will need funds who have no interest in crops to enable them to pay tution.

I am Very Respectfully
Your Obt. Servant.
(Signed) F. P. Wood
Sub. Asst. Coms'r.
