that my labors relative to the School in Marshall have been considerably impeded and in fact nullified to a great extent by the injudicious interference of Dr. Sampson American, a contract Doctor at Marshall - who claimed control over the building into which I had moved the freedmens School early in October last. Dr. American it seems is an officer (Sec. I believe) of the "Loyal League" and says that the building is owned by said Society - that the colored men who agreed to rent the building, at the head of whom is one Wiley Johnson a freedman, had no right to let it for any such purpose, and threatened to me that he (Dr. American) would have the School turned out of the building and the doors locked up. Upon which I informed him that I would report his action to General Reynolds as it would virtually be breaking up the School as effectually as if done by rebels. He got very mad with me for saying I would report him to the General, and wrote a complaint about me, and in addition out of revenge preferred charges against me.
