a good crop be made the coming year, I am convinced, that this county can be laid off in school Districts & made entirely self sustaining.

The whites have proven conclusively, by their action's this month, that they are in favor of Educating the Freedmen. No teacher need fear interruption so long as he conducts himself properly & attends strictly to his business. Before the close of another year, should no untoward event take place to embitter the races against each other, it is my opinion, Freedmen's school's will be sought by Citizens of standing in the Community. The secret is they pay better than the White Schools. The leading Clergyman of this town has repeatedly told me he made a mistake that he did not take the Columbus school, three years ago when offered to him, "that he could have done more good than he has,&  made more money." Very recently he told me he would take the school here, could he free himself from his present engagements!!  Previously his reason was, prejudice, was too strong.

In reviewing the work of the year just done notwithstanding more might have been accomplished than what has, perhaps, still progress has been made; prejudices have been allayed, & advocates to the Cause have grown up in localities where a year or two gone by, it would not have been safe to discuss the subject.
