Waco 4th May 1869

Revd Sir

I have just received your Despatches with certificates for signature for past month I feel myself deeply obligated for the Interest you you have taken in my behalf in both School and Church matters The only way I can fully show my gratitude for the confidence and favour shown to me (Stranger as I am to you) Is by faithfully performing the several duties assigned me to the utmost of my ability

Seeing the ignorance of the great majority of those Colored people and the terrible hostility of the Southern people to any Northern man making any effort for Educating or Elivating them in Society

I have conscientiously consecrated myself to the Lord to perform whatever work opened out before me Providentially I think I see his guiding Providence. I bow with humble gratitude

In the School Buisiness there has some changes & opposition taken place in the School Buisiness but Saturday night the 1st Inst they had four added to their number and [[cross out]] by a Public Meeting The Committee with these 4 additional number are now School Trustees and Shadrick Willis is one of their number which will now settle the controversy on funds

I am Dear Sir your
Brother in Christ
James D Scarlett
