D. Sir:
I have the honor to report that, in conformity with your letter of instructions, [[strikethrough]] of [[/strikethrough]] July 20th, I called the Board of Trustees of the Freedmen's school together, and explained to them my instructions; also in reference to the matter of advertising. I then send to the Board the letter of which you were the honored recipient; & propounded to them individually if they endorsed the language & style - None but Mr. Allen replied, & he made himself responsible for the letter & declined to inform me who his amanuensis  was. The reading of the letter, the impudence of its style - & the cool, dignified & indifferent demeanor of the August Board!!, for I never saw a small assembly more troubled with big heads, made me irritable, and I proceeded to administer a castigation not exactly in conformity with instructions. Allen, looked for the Contract - doubtless
