Austin January 5th/70

Rev. Joseph Welch

My dear Sir
The col'd people are again mourning in the matter of starting a school in my neighborhood You may recollect that I aided them somewhat in gitting a school some 18 months ago - this school after six weeks had 44 schollars and was prospering finely - but was broken up by burning down the building occupied

This so discouraged them that until now they have made no effort in that direction. I am assured that they can now sustain a school of more than fifty schollars - but I have not inquire sufficiently in to the matter to speak authoritatively on that point

Should this be Sa can you give them aid in any manner - either - to help them build a house - or support a school teacher.

I arrived here last week after more than one years absence.

The neighborhood I allude to is on the San Gabriel river fourteen miles below Georgetown.

I am at liberty to refer you to Genl Reynolds

Respectfully &c
Joseph W Talbot

P.S. Address me at Georgetown
